Most bad practice starts as good practice. Someone faces a real problem and finds a fix that works. It works again, so a few more people use it. Word gets around. Within a couple of years the fix has a name, a paragraph in the policy manual, and a slot in the academy block. That’s usually where the trouble starts.

Leadership is responsibility. That doesn't mean grinding yourself down so everyone else comes out ahead. The standard you hold your people to, do the work right, protect the community, keep faith with the constitution you swore to, is good for you too. You live in the community you protect. You answer to the same law you enforce.

How an officer, assaulter, or armed American holds, carries, and moves a weapon decides more outcomes than how tight a group they can shoot on a square range. The shooting is the last few percent. Everything ahead of it is armed movement, and most of a working career happens in that space.

The recruit walking in today is no less capable than the one who walked in two decades ago. What's changed is what we ask of him and what we're willing to settle for. We lowered the standard, called the result qualified, and then acted surprised when accuracy under stress turned out poor and public trust in police shootings kept eroding.
